Social Entrepreneurship Experience – Munduk & Pemuteran, Northern Bali (5D/4N)

Beyond the crowded beaches of Bali and away from the bustling streets of Kuta lies the true nature of the Island of Gods. The pristine forests and quiet villages of Northern Bali are the perfect background for travellers who search for an experience that is more real and meaningful.

The local community of Munduk has done amazing work on enhancing the livelihood of their people, alleviating poverty through sustainable farming and coffee planting, and using their natural resources to engage in responsible tourism activities. Preserved in an almost pristine condition and largely untouched by mass tourism, the people of Munduk are at an advantage as they have the opportunity to enhance their livelihood through sustainable tourism that is respectful to the local culture and is friendly to the environment.

As you discover more about the social entrepreneurship initiatives in Munduk, you would also get to enjoy its beautiful surrounding. The areas around the twin lakes of Buyan and Tamblingan offer visitors the opportunity to take a leisurely walk on the gentle hill slopes and through farming areas. You may even get invited into homes of the farmers and partake in coffee or tea for a true Bali hospitality. The cool climate and the adoption of organic coffee farming by the locals that saw the use of shadow trees has resulted in an increasing number of bird life. So, do not forget to bring a binocular to catch a glimpse of kingfisher, spider hunters, swallow and red jungle fowl, among others.

In Pemuteran, extraordinary effort by the locals has seen a wonderful transformation of a damaged marine environment. It was an area that was nearly devoid of corals and fishes because of global warming and destructive fishing practices. Realizing the danger of over exploitation, the villagers at the fishing village of Pemuteran established a village-run marine protected area to safeguard the coral reefs and fishing resources. Locals, called the ‘Pencalang Laut’ or ‘Sea Guardians’, are appointed to enforce village laws. With funds collected within the community, locals are trained to be the worlds’ first professional reef gardeners, growing corals and caring for them. What visitors can see now is a clean beach and healthy coral life that provides the villagers with a crucial source of income through low-impact tourism activities.

Learning about the amazing effort of the local communities in Pemuteran to reinvigorate the marine life, visitors would surely appreciate even more the abundance of sea creatures and corals during the snorkeling or sailing experience on the third day. The clear and conscious work to promote sustainable tourism in Pemuteran, alleviate poverty and enhance the livelihood of the villages is an extraordinary example of what social entrepreneurship can achieve.

Escape the craziness of Kuta and leave the tranquility of Ubud for Munduk and Pemuteran, and an experience that is unique and even life changing. It is all about giving back to the community and acknowledging the ongoing work to encourage the adoption of social entrepreneurship among the future generations of the Balinese.
